If you pay attention to your online presence at all, you’ve probably heard the term “SEO” being thrown around quite a bit, but do you know what it is? Many times when it comes up in discussion, it sounds technical, confusing and hard to understand. In today’s post, we’re giving you the complete SEO: 101! We’ll explain everything from what it is and why it’s important to how to use it to optimize your website to reach your audience.
What is SEO?
SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. It’s basically a series of tools that you can use to ensure that your content or business will attract the attention of search engines when someone searches for keywords related to your business. In other words, it’s how you tell search engines what your business or content is about so that your website is seen by the right people.
A search engine’s job is to get people the results they’re looking for. When someone searches for a good or service that you offer, of course you want to be the first to show up, right? There are a few different things that you can do with SEO on your website to help you get seen by more people and in turn, help grow your business.
An SEO-friendly website starts with great keywords. It’s important to identify strategic keywords that relate to your business and the types of things a customer or client would be searching for to find you. There are a variety online tools that you can use to figure out which keywords will work best for your business, such as Google’s Keyword Planner. (This is also a service that we offer as part of our social packages.) Once you’ve determined the keywords that will work best for you, you’ll need to incorporate them into the content of your website, such as in the titles and subtitles of pages, image captions, blog posts, etc. It’s important to use them where they fit naturally into the written content of your site. The goal here is to rank in the top search results for your chosen keywords and thus get seen by a larger audience.
When you’re looking for recommendations online, you’re typically going to click on the results that have photos and videos over the ones that only provide text. Search engines know that people want to see more than just words, so they’re going to show those types of sites more love in the search results. Make sure to include relevant photos and videos on the pages of your site if you have them. Provide a main photo for your blog posts, but also include other photos in the body of your posts when you can. Give search engines more to show so that your website will rank higher in searches and your audience can better understand who you are and what you have to offer.
When a different website or blog has a link to your site, search engines like Google will see that as a recommendation for your business. Whether it’s guest blog posts on websites and blogs in your industry, your website listing on online directories or customers/readers sharing your information on their own sites, having these links directing back to your website tells search engines that people are talking about you. This will help you rank higher in search results.
As you can see, SEO is vital to marketing your business and helping your target audience find you. We hope these tips will make search engine optimization easier to understand and help you to grow your brand online. Still need help? Feel free to set up a coffee chat with one of our reps.
